Simauta Dess: CRUFTS 14 - Chow Chows Chow Chows It was a pleasure & honour to judge this good entry & thank you to the exhibitors & to my ring stewards for keeping everything running smoothly. My scheduled time to commence judging was 12.15, but due to the previous judge overrunning we were delayed by almost an hour. With the introduction of Breed Watch concerns for judges which have to be adhered too & extra KC rules & regulations there is a degree of pressure on the judge to be completed in time but this was managed. Moving onto my report one of the main concerns is the lack of correct movement. This was being videoed for Breed Council use & it will be interesting to note the variations which are many. Several looked good stood in profile but their movement let them down. It is also becoming evident that we are seeing weaker bone in the hindquarters with too much angulation & another area to be watchful is weak pasterns with long spayed feet. Breed type in the UK is so varied now but for some exceptions & looking back over the records for the past 4 years an Overseas Chow has won BOB & there’s no denying it appears that they do have the edge on the UK Chows at the moment. Many of the overseas Chows do carry our bloodlines back in their generations & probably not a bad thing that several are being imported but must be used with due care & understanding of these pedigrees. I am sure many will agree that more work has to be done to hopefully achieve producing many more outstanding specimens of top quality Chows which were being shown several years ago in the UK. On a positive note breeders have worked very hard to continue to breed healthy Chows as proved by the excellent results of our veterinary checks since they were introduced by the KC. Temperaments were excellent & presentation but for a few was very good. Eyes are as they should be with the exception of a couple that were not good & on the whole the Chows were fit & healthy specimens. VD (6,1a) Lovely class to start & all of which were presented very well. A long time for them to hang around though & of course some take this in their stride & others become a little lethargic so were placed accordingly. 1 Kirby & Lamb’s Ch Hiswin Star Magellan, shaded/r, I have judged before & he looks as good now as he did 6 years ago. Now 8½ years & lovely for breed type with good expression & so well balance with a good reach of neck. Thick small well placed ears & lovely clean dark eye & pigment. Correct width in chest & well boned legs & feet & high tailset. Really moved well & glided around the ring with such verve; 2 Farmer’s Towsushet’s The Hobbit at Simway, 10½ years old self red. Head well laid out with good ear placement, eyes a little round but dark & clean, excellent mouth & pigment for age & a decent front, with lovely bone & tight firm pasterns. Good in rib & body & in super condition & tail carried firmly over his back; 3 Lindsay’s Jdlindchow Chang Peng, self red of 9 years also in super condition & very well presented. Stronger masculine head but without exaggeration with clean dark eyes, good pigment & well off for bone. PD (5,1) 1 Absalom’s Wengeordy Benedictine, shaded/r, liked his head type which has a pleasing expression. Width to his flat skull & proportioned muzzle with thick well placed ears. Eyes dark & clean, good bite, reasonable front assembly with lovely bone & substance all through, firm in loin & tail carried tightly over his back. Would like to see a touch more leg to proportion balance. He has a lovely outgoing temperament & moved in control & steadily both ways; 2 Hollies & Carr’s Janqbu Justifying Jacob, Shaded/r, liked his size & balance with a decent reach of neck. Head presenting a pleasant outlook, he has with width to skull & well placed ears, clean dark eye, good bone in forequarters & firm in pastern. Handful for his owner today so unsettled & his movement both ways very erratic & I would like more bone in his rear legs. He is in lovely body condition & excellently presented; 3 Bishop’s Orinell’s Let’s Tango at Shojo, cream presented in absolute tip-top condition, lovely dense correct textured coat. Loved his head type complimented with a dark eye & neat well placed ears. I would like more size but he has lovely bone & body throughout with good rounded tight feet. He was not timid or a problem to go over at all but would persist in dropping his tail & if he settles & carries his tail over his back this would project a more complete balanced picture. Moved out steadily & positively both ways. JD (5) 1 Parsons’ Jenrene’s Mighty Joe, stocky square compact blue. Masculine expression which is enough, well padded muzzle, thick ears, eye colour & pigment fine. Decent width to front, well ribbed up & in good body. Strong bone throughout & tail carried firmly over his back. A touch more neck would complete his outline & his coat was a little dull but his overall maturity & solid frame won him the class. Steady mover both ways; 2 Brown’s Lechan Captain Jack, black 1 & 2, both sired by the same dog & differ in types. He is of good size with excellent pigment/mouth & eye. Broad skull & thick well placed ears. Well sprung ribs with good body & good reach of neck. More time needed to develop fully in front assembly but he is good in outline & in lovely condition. Moved steadily both ways; 3 Hughes’ Tomukoo Cream Snowman, as name applies, upstanding & well up to size, head pleasing with a good eye & acceptable pigment for a cream. Would like to see him fill out more in frame & forequarters but another that I feel will be slower to mature to his full potential. Good topline with a lovely reach of neck. Credit to his owners for his presentation & moved out well both ways. YD (2) 1 Elyutina’s Miketilla Moon River, upstanding black in full coat, who’s excellent in profile & balance. Lovely reach of neck & good tailset. Head developing well for age, decent skull & ear placement, excellent pigment/mouth & dark clean eye. Good depth & width of chest with good length of legs that are well boned. Time on his side to reach his full potential & should mature into a very nice specimen. Full of himself & his handler did a good job to keep him under control to get the best out of him. He has a lovely outgoing temperament, moved well in front but needs to tighten on the rear, coat excellently presented; 2 Oakleys’ Sukura Qashkai, shaded/r of different type to 1, possessing a masculine head with flat skull & well placed thick ear. Good in eye & pigment. Lovely bone in front & rear with good tight feet. He presents a better picture now that he has come up a little on leg giving more balance to his firm strong body & has a decent reach of neck. Steady mover both ways although a touch wider in front. PGD (5,3) 1 Clare’s Norskov’s Future Fighter at Benoleo, upstanding shaded/r smooth of excellent size & substance to match. Masculine outlook who’s good in eye/mouth & has thick well placed ears. Good length of leg & well boned legs & feet, scored on width of chest & rib & his outline complimented by a decent reach of neck & tail carried firmly over his back. Steady typical mover; 2 Fisher’s Poppykins Smooth Criminal, shaded/r, also up to size who’s very well balanced. Head clean cut without any exaggeration, lovely clean dark eye & good bite/pigment. Not as much bone & substance as 1, & can stand close in front but excels in profile complimented with a good reach of neck & tailset. He’s in lovely condition presented very well with good positive free movement both ways. LD (3) 1 Douse’s Norskov’s Foni Baloni at Shasadee, black of good size & balance with substance to match with a masculine head on a well arched neck. Thick ears well placed, clean eye & excellent mouth/pigment. Good front assembly & length of legs which are well boned with tight firm pasterns. Well developed ribs, strong firm hindquarters complimented with a good tailset. Presented & showed very well & moved steadily & soundly both ways under good control; 2 Stevens’ Maychow Red Emperor at Shifanu, self red a touch more upstanding who’s in excellent condition, lighter in bone but very sound all though. Head has width to skull & well placed ears with lovely clean dark eyes of a sensible size, good mouth/pigmentation. Good in rib & body with decent reach of neck & a good tailset. Alert, active & worked very well with his handler; 3 Heims’ Miketilla Mondrian at Brunita, self red, also in excellent condition, compact & well balanced of medium size, firm in body & well ribbed up. Masculine head with clean dark eyes of good shape. Adequate bone & firm quarters. Could use his neck to better advantage & today he appeared a little lethargic on the move. OD (12,3) What a super class with so many lovely quality Chows & I was splitting hairs but my eventual winner won on his overall qualities & showmanship & I wished I could have also placed more Chows in the cards from this strong class of excellent specimens. 1 Elyutina’s Rus/Lv/Fin Ch Simauta Dess Logris, lovely black male who I have judged before in Germany when a Junior who’s matured on so well. Attractive masculine head type without any coarseness or wrinkle across the muzzle. His eyes are clean & dark & of correct oval shape. Mouth & pigmentation as it should be, excellent. Well placed thick ears with a good head carriage. Excellent bone in forequarters/hindquarters & right up on his toes with well let down hocks. He has a good lay of shoulder & well ribbed up & uses his neck to advantage complimented with a high tailset. In super condition & body & he’s so well balanced, excellent in profile & shown so professionally never putting a foot wrong & on the move he just flows around the ring like he owns it. Excellent quality Chow & pleased to award him the CC. Pressed hard in the challenge for BOB but the bitch just had the edge; 2 Bettini’s Heart Mind Fire Dei Leoni Imperiali, deep red also in tip-top condition & won this position on his overall qualities & excellent for breed type. Most expressive head with broad flat skull & excellent thick ears correctly positioned. Mouth/pigmentation good, super bone throughout & well up on his toes. Decent reach of neck leading into a good lay of shoulder. Compact firm body with well developed ribs with a level topline, strong loin complimented with a high tailset. Certainly considered for the top position, a very close decision but just failed out to the showmanship of the winner. Excellent example of the breed type & I had no hesitation to award him the RCC with ease in excellent company; 3 Squires’ Ch Kwaitang Kristian at Kyong, Shaded/r upstanding & well up to size he is a different type to 1 & 2, to be critical would prefer a touch more masculinity but what he has is acceptable & he has an honest clean head which is well laid out with width to his skull & good ear placement, excellent dark eye, good mouth & pigmentation. Good bone with a lovely reach of neck & good tailset. He moved out well both ways with steady free positive movement. Very much out of coat & a touch out of body today but his overall qualities earned him this place. He worked well together with his handler & showed himself to advantage. GCD (2) 1 T The Hobbit at S; 2 Fisher’s Akakuro Hey Jude at Poppykins, red, smaller side of the Standard who’s very compact. Very profusely coated & under this coat he does have some good bone but this did spoil his overall balance & movement. He has a lovely clean dark eye, good mouth/pigment with well placed thick ears, strong hindquarters, complimented with a high tailset. VB (2,1) 1) Mumford’s Shardan Miss Millie of Chowawen, red of 9 years who’s in lovely condition & body, quite upstanding, she is a little finer in bone but has good length of leg & neck & lovely dark eye with excellent pigment for her age. Good width to chest & lay of shoulder with a good tailset. Steady mover. PB (6,2) A class of varying types who are similar in age & no doubt will change places on another occasion. 1 Southgate’s Santicana Blue Sparkle, loved her colour & coat texture which was well groomed & presented. She is very compact & well balanced with good spring of rib & firm hindquarters with a high tailset. Good bone & well up on her toes. Pretty expression with acceptable eye colour of good shape. She is light, agile & active in her movement, but a touch more length of leg would complete her front action; 2 Blight & Lovell’s Rosechow Charisma, shaded/r of good size, excellent front assembly with good bone & lovely legs & feet. Very pretty with a feminine expression, good in eye mouth/ pigment. Would prefer a thicker ear but they are well placed. Not quite the balance of 1, but she has a good spring & length of rib. Her tail was a little loose to start but once she gained confidence & settled it was fine. Her overall condition is excellent. Moved reasonably well; 3 Ellis’ Bojinghai Aurora’s Dream, shining black coat in lovely condition, compact & well balanced. Pretty feminine head with lovely dark eye & good mouth/pigment as expected from a black. Nicely boned legs & feet but structure slower to development & she was a little slack on her rear movement. Lovely reach of neck with good tailset. A little unsettled when going over & on the move, but will watch her progress with interest to see how she fully matures on. JB (9,5) 1 Cannon’s Miketilla Marinsky, red, who’s upstanding with a good reach of neck. Feminine expression with neat thick ears set on broad flat skull. Lovely dark eye of sensible size. Good lay of shoulder & spring of ribs. Deep chest & good length of leg with good bone throughout & high tailset. Currently in between coats which is not always a good time for juniors but she still presented a good picture. It will be interesting to see her when she has reached her for potential. The Breed Standard asks for active & she is certainly that, full of energy & a good free positive mover; 2 Heims’ Kwaitang Krabbie Apple at Brunita, shaded/r of decent size, another in between coats. Feminine expression, head is well laid out with ears well placed. Nice reach of neck, dark eye/pigment, she is in good body but a touch longer in back & going through her junior stage & has not yet reached her full development. She is very confident & outgoing with sensible movement both ways; 3 Finlay’s Finchow Florence, excellent gleaming black coat with silver shadings, typical feminine expression with excellent mouth & pigment & lovely dark eye, some useful bone throughout. A touch longer in back but she is in excellent body condition & another who has not reached her full potential. She has a lovely temperament although a little playful & a touch difficult to be handled which let her down. Moved out better when under control once settled. YB (6,3) 1 Hollies & Carr’s Chopan’s Cherub of Tashi, cream, who’s very self assured with a typy feminine head with neat well placed ears. Lovely dark eye, good mouth/pigment for a cream. Good firm body & spring of rib but care not to get overweight. Good bone with neat rounded tight feet. She uses her well arched neck to advantage complimented with a good tailset. She is in excellent coat which is presented superbly & carries herself well, although a touch wider in front; 2 Cannon’s Miketilla Mayah, liked her very much, close decision between her & 1, one to watch. She’s up to size & quite upstanding but feel she has further to go before she reaches her full maturity. She is a different type to 1, not quite the soft expression at the moment. Good mouth/pigment & dark eye of sensible size. Ribs developing well with good bone & length of leg. Lovely reach of neck & tailset. Moved freely both ways; 3 Vekovischeva’s Look At Me Dei Leoni Imperiali, black who’s upstanding but lighter in bone & substance. Head slower to develop in width but she has lovely dark eyes, good mouth, excellent pigmentation as required for a black. She needs to mature & fill out more in frame. She is lovely in profile & balance to match complimented with a high tailset & she moved out so freely & sensibly both ways. PGB (9,4) Very varied class & no doubt will change places on other judges preferences. 1 Ellis’ Emjaques Princess Aurora at Bojinghai, black, lots to like, when checking her details noticed that she comes from lines that have produced very good specimens over the years & could see some of these qualities in her. Liked her front profile with good width & depth to chest & well boned legs & feet. Feminine expression with good eye & pigment & decent reach of neck. Ribs have developed well but care must be taken for her not to gain too much weight as she could spoil her overall balance & topline. She could also benefit by working on her profuse rear breechings which would then complete a more balanced picture. Presented & handled well; 2 Mumford’s Chowawen Christmas Berrie, shorter coated red who is in lovely condition, clean head presenting a feminine expression. Compact body with a lovely outline. Clean dark eye of good shape. Broad chest, straight forelimbs, well developed ribs & in good body. Has a good reach of neck & lay of shoulder, complimented with a good tailset, would just prefer a touch more all around; 3 Watmough’s Sumsai Sweet Tamazin at Tedmisty, shaded/r up to size with a good reach of neck & reasonably bone throughout. Pretty feminine head which gives a good expression when she used her ears, good mouth/pigment, eyes a little round but clean & dark, a touch longer in back but she is in good body & in lovely coat presented well. Steady mover. LB (4,1) Ellis’ Bojinghai Honeysuckle, shaded/r, very pretty feminine head & very well balanced. Nicely arched neck supporting a broad skulled head, nice width to muzzle, good in eyes & mouth. Well boned legs & feet, broad chest & well developed ribs of good length & solid in structure. Strong rear with small well let down hocks & good tailset. She tends to hold her ear carriage back & when they are forward into the correct position this gives a much better expression but won this class with ease. Good steady mover; 2 Sweeney’s Chowetha Million Memories, red, who’s lighter in frame but it’s not until you go over this bitch you find point for point to the Breed Standard that she is very well constructed. She is upstanding who presents a good balanced outline, with a broad chest & well developed ribs & legs of good length & which are reasonably boned & she cannot stand wrong. Pretty expression with good mouth/pigment, lovely reach of neck & high tailset, harsh textured coat coming in & good free positive movement both ways; 3 Douse’s Shasadee’s Dhimond Tee Arra, red, very useful type of bitch who’s good all round, pretty expression with lovely dark clean eyes, good mouth/pigment & good length of leg with decent bone, width of chest & in excellent body & condition with a high tailset who moved reasonably well. OB (12,4) What another lovely class of quality bitches & many had to go empty handed. Splitting hairs between them but my eventual winner of outstanding quality could not be denied the top spot. 1 Vekovischeva’s Bon Triumph Tiffany, gleaming red coat & my notes say, excellent in balance & breed type & could have taken her home I absolutely loved her. She is very striking & elegant & enhanced with an excellent feminine head which is superbly well laid out. Dark clean eye of good shape & size, good mouth & pigmentation, well ribbed up & short backed with a lovely reach of neck carrying her head well above her topline. She has good length of leg & lovely bone throughout with the tightest of feet so well up on her toes you cannot see her feet & her rear legs that stood correctly under her hip joints when coming to a stop. Very firm hindquarters complimented with a high tailset. In super body & condition & what a pleasure to watch her on the move she was so agile & covered the ground with ease & had no hesitation in awarding her the CC & BOB as she showed to perfection. The vet was waiting at the ringside to take her for her health check & shortly after this she was called through to the Group sadly she did not perform as well as she had in the breed but Chows being Chows maybe she had had enough. It’s a shame that the high profile breeds are not in the ring first; 2 Evans’ Ch Simcha Chucuito, a quality bitch of excellent size who’s a favourite of mine & in excellent body & condition who’s very well ribbed up. Head well laid out with an excellent eye, mouth/pigment & thick well placed ears on a correct width of skull. She has strength all through but still maintains her femininity. She has a lovely reach of neck with good topline & equal boning throughout & stands completely natural without any adjustment, particularly after returning from being moved & along with this she has that desired ring presence & is at one with her owner all the time. Well deserved RCC; 3 Williamson’s Ch Dejoh Dior, cream, smaller end of the Standard but so very well balanced. Excellent feminine head which is well laid out head with lovely clean dark eyes & pigment acceptable for a cream. Well boned legs & feet, nice reach of neck & a good tailset. Excellent true pendulum rear action which is not often seen in the ring today. Today she lacked her usual sparkle that I have seen before but on the plus side she was very well presented & handled.
